Large & Impressive Trade Sign from France in the form of a Giant Knife with worn gilded lettering 'LAGUIOLE'. The Sign is in fact a huge heavy metal blade with shaped wooden handle, and the lettering refers to the small historic town of Laguiole (pronounced Lye-oll) in the mountainous Auvergne region of southern France , which was always the tradtional centre for making knives, dating back to the Middle Ages or even before. The sign which was made either to stand or hang in a shop or possibly an exhibition, measures 62 inches long x 7 wide x 2 deep, and is in excellent condition with some minor marking on the metal. Circa 1920-1950
Knives of all types are still sold all over France, not only traditionally in 'Quincailleries' but including special shops located in autoroute service stations, and a high proportion of the knives still made in Laguiole.
