A Wonderful Original Painted Metal Sign of a Giant Wedding Cake which hung inside a 19th Century Patisserie shop in Bordeaux, Western France.
The sign dating from around 1860-1880 was created by a process called 'japanning' - it was hand painted, then varnished with 'Japan' lacquer, and then baked in an oven.
One of an original pair, it was fixed to the wall inside the shop, depicting a traditional wedding cake, an example of the patisseur's range of creations.
At present the sign is hanging in the kitchen in my London flat- I value it highly .
Measures 40 inches high x 24 wide. The oval tole sign has a wooden backing.
