A Beautiful and completely original example of a 19th Century Painted Marriage Box (or 'Coffre de Marriage' ) from the Normandy region of Northern France.
By tradition , the handpainted and crafted box was presented at the wedding and then used by the new wife to bring her small possessions and jewellery to her husband's house .
The domed top pine plank box with hinged lid is in good solid condition for its age,- missing the hasp and locking mechanism of the old metal lock - though still having intact all the original symbolic decorations of lovebirds, roses, flowerpot and woven rug.
Measures 17.5 inches wide x 11 high x 11 deep. Circa 1840-1880. From Normandy , France.
(Note to intending purchaser- free shipping space for another small item inside the box !)
