Magnificent Pair of Carved Pilasters of Vases of Flowers, in old if not original paint and gilding, which came off the celebrated turn-of-the century Ocean Liner, the S.S.Berlin.
The German built liner Berlin was famous in the years before the First World War, not only for its first class luxury travel but also for the many refugees it brought as steerage passengers to ELLIS Island , New York.
The carved pilasters were taken from the 1st class Lounge on the ship- along with the Neptune figure also offered here (item 1722 -now sold)- when as a post-war 'prize of war', she was sold to White Star Lines and then taken to Portsmouth. England where she was completely stripped of her original decorations, then refitted, and her name changed to the 'Arabic'.
The Floral Carvings are carved in pitch-pine and stand 40 inches high each .The carvings are circa 1908, the year the ship was built. In very good condition.
