Painted Dartboard Sign from English Fairground
Magnificent painted Darts Stall Sign from an old Fairground in England.
With intricate wirework this large beautiful and original hand-painted board was used as the sign on the front of the stall rather than as the actual darts game board itself used by the customers, and has therefore been preserved without a multitude of tiny holes. The peripheral lettering proclaims 'Score 25 or over', '3 Darts for 2d' (tuppence !- two pennies). (The actual darts game board from the same fairground stall ,almost identical to the sign but marked by holes, was sold in an auction a few years ago, - I show it here -see the bottom photo)
The game of Darts actually originated in the 19th century fairground from where it graduated to the English Pub, its modern home.
A wonderful piece of Folk Art. the Board-Sign dates between 1890 and 1925,
Measures 38 inches high x 39 wide.
