Primitive Nativity Scene Painting from France.
An unusual Oil Painting on a shield shaped board which came from a Chapel in northern France. The impressionistic painting depicts a seated woman holding a book and rocking a baby in its cradle while angels hover above. The surface has interestingly faded and worn patination, but the woman and child have a very real empathetic quality. The painted and shaped shield with its 'bitten out' corners appears to date from between 1890 and 1920 and must have been made to fit into a specific frame or wood panel or perhaps an alcove..
Measures 33 inches wide by 32 high. The wooden board in firm condition with absense of any defects.
