Forget Me Not Antiques
Mid 19thc Dresden Decorated German Candy Box for a Doll Trunk
$50
Sentimental memorabilia, books, dolls, sewing heirlooms & holiday treasures from the 1850's-1950's
Forget Me Not Antiques specializes in the mementoes of women and children from the Victorian and Edwardian eras
Gift giving in the 19th century was a special affair and the packaging of a gift was often as elaborate as the gift itself. Enter boxes. . .of all kinds. . .especially boxes for candy. Victorian candy boxes could be fabulous and were frequently saved to hold one’s treasures long after the candy had disappeared.
This beautiful 1870's /1880's candy box was likely made in Austria or Germany judging from the text on its cover die cut. It would make a wonderful enhancement to a doll display. The box measures 4” x 3” x ¾” and is made of heavy card.. The sides are covered with gold paper overlaid with a printed rose paper band. The lid is stunning! Dresden trim and Dresden corner triangles decorate a green velvet background. In the center is a die cut of red, pink and white roses surrounding the message which roughly translates:
The _____ is a gentle boy
Who delights us with his joy and fun
Therefore, plant a small gift
Quietly and gently in your heart.
The rim of the box bottom is trimmed with paper lace. What a lovely addition this box would make to a German doll’s trunk!
The box is in excellent condition with a tightly fitting lid, solid corners and all of the trims intact. The die cut has some scratches and a point of paper loss that hampers the translation of its first line. Please examine the photos and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
