19thc German Straw Suitcase Candy Box
$85
Sentimental memorabilia, books, dolls, sewing heirlooms & holiday treasures from the 1850's-1950's
Forget Me Not Antiques specializes in the mementoes of women and children from the Victorian and Edwardian eras
Here is a 19th century candy box that you don’t see very often in this size. It is a large straw work suitcase very like the smaller German straw candy container valises that hung on 19th and early 20th century Christmas trees. I believe this candy container is German too.
The suitcase measures 7 ¼” x 4 ¾” x 1 ½”. It is made of heavy card covered with glazed blue paper that is overlaid with woven straw on the outside. A die cut of two horsemen decorates the lid. One cord handle is attached to the side of the lid and another to the bottom where a Dresden scrap escutcheon is glued. The inside of the box has a raised card lining so that the lid will rest on the bottom edge of the box rather than cover it. The lining is trimmed with embossed and pierced paper lace.
The candy box has weathered the years quite well. The straw, cords, escutcheon and paper lace are in good condition. Points to note: The lid was originally hinged to the bottom but is no longer. The lid corners have split, been repaired and split again so the lid slips down a bit. The blue paper is worn along the edges. Please examine the photos and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
While you are here, do enjoy the other boxes I have available at this time. Thank you for visiting my shop today.
