I am pleased to offer an 1870’s unmarked paper lace valentine and envelope from the extraordinary valentine collection of esteemed author, collector, appraiser and ephemerist, Carroll Alton Means.

This lovely valentine measures 4 ½” x 6 ¾”. It is an embossed paper lace folder with Dresden leaf corner decorations and a central ring of embossed lace roses around a pair of scrap decorated gilt framed ovals. The ovals lift to reveal an embossed and gilded scroll on orange glazed paper with the message:

Loves Tribute.
Ever fond, ever true
I will be with you,

For you alone I live.

The orange paper gives the valentine its background color. Green and blue glazed paper wafers glued to the back of the paper lace add more color.

The envelope measures 7” x 5”. The front is embossed with bluebells, roses and morning glories that surround its central oval. It is addressed to “Ella G. Whitmore/Malden Mass.” There is no postmark so I’m imagining the valentine was hand delivered.

The valentine is in excellent condition with no paper toning but there are several spots of foxing under the orange paper and on the back. The envelope has a few foxing spots and a torn left edge. Please examine the photos and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

While you are here, do enjoy the other valentines I have available for sale at this time. Thank you for visiting my shop today.
