Forget Me Not Antiques specializes in the mementoes of women and children from the Victorian and Edwardian eras
Celebrating a French child’s baptism with a gift box or cone of small candies – dragees (sugared almonds)-- as a wish for good health, abundance, happiness and fertility and a memento for family and friends, has a long history. In recent history, candy manufacturers produced bags and boxes of various shapes with lovely cover images to hold the candies and be saved to remember the event.
I found these two charming French printed keepsake bags in Amsterdam. I believe they date to the early 20th century. The bags are 6” tall x 4 ¾” wide when flat. When open they are about 3 ½” in diameter. They are made from two layers of crepe paper-- the inside layer blank and the outside printed with ribbon squares and pink and red posies. The bags have paper covered solid bottoms and silk cords threaded through silk sheaths stitched to their sides. When filled with dragees, the bags can be cinched with the cords and have a decorative ruffled top. What lovely table favors they would have made.
The bags are in excellent condition with just a spot of two of foxing and could certainly be used today but they would be even more fun in a display. Please examine the photos and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
