Forget Me Not Antiques specializes in the mementoes of women and children from the Victorian and Edwardian eras
The tiny FORGET ME NOT (myosotis) holds a special place in the Victorian language of flowers. It is the symbol of True Love. This might explain why images of forget me nots appear on so many Victorian valentines. In folklore, it was a symbol of the desire for loyalty and signaled shared secrets. The forget me not was also believed to have healing powers.
I’m delighted to offer a framed Victorian pressed forget-me-not. The piece measures 6" x 7 3/8". This token of affection was created in 1848, one hundred years before I was born. A sprig of forget me nots with two flowers was pressed and preserved. Tiny pink strips were used to attach the sprig to the center of a blank valentine folder. Plain wide borders surround the folder’s central floral embossed frame. Below the frame is inked,
“Forget Me Not”/ Sent from Dublin by Erasmus (?) / June 25, 1848.
The folder is encased in a 1/2" wide gessoed wooden frame of indeterminate age.
The piece is in very good condition although the forget me nots have lost their color and there is some gesso loss to the sides of the frame. Please examine the photos and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
While you are here, do take a peek at the other tokens of affection I have available at this time. Thank you for visiting my shop today.
