I do love early gift boxes! From the 1880’s through the 1920’s, lovely small-print papers were often used by European and American manufacturers to cover accessory, trinket and candy boxes that held treats of of all kinds. When the candy was gone, the boxes were often kept to hold sentimental treasures. They are now wonderful pieces to add to doll displays.

Perhaps this little oval gift box originally held a small hat or vanity item. There are no clues except for a faint floral scent. The box is a good size measuring 8 ½” x 6” x 3 ½”. It is made of light card and covered with a dulled gold paper overlaid with a textured floral print gold paper similar to that found on turn-of-the-century paper mache Easter eggs. Inside is purple glassine tissue that may or may not be original. There are tiny blue and purple specks around the inside bottom edges. The number 32 in penciled in blue on the bottom.

This lovely box is very well preserved and certainly was cared for over the years. There is some light edge rubbing of the lid paper and a few foxing spots on the inside bottom. Please examine the photos and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

While you are here, do enjoy the other boxes I have available for sale at this time. Thank you for visiting my shop today.
