Forget Me Not Antiques specializes in the mementoes of women and children from the Victorian and Edwardian eras
From the latter part of the 19th century, Germany factories mass-produced and distributed cardboard and papier mache candy containers of all shapes and sizes for holiday celebrations. Molded in shapes appropriate to the holiday, the lithographed vessels usually featured illustrations depicting nursery rhymes and holiday symbols or floral designs. with embossed Dresden trim. Before the Easter holiday, egg shaped candy containers were sold by the dozens. I have been fortunate to have collected a number of early 20th century German examples over the years and am pleased to offer them in my shop during the next few weeks.
This large papier mache egg candy container was probably made in the 1930’s. It measures 7 ¾” x 5 ¼”. As with most of the paper mache eggs, this one is made of hand applied strips of litho print paper glued over a cardboard paper mache base that has a raised inner liner so that the top half of the egg just rests on the bottom half. The outside paper has the same image on both sides –pink and orange crocuses on a golden field. A band of matching paper trims the outside edges. The inside is lined with an orange sunburst and dot print paper. The inside bottom edge has vestiges of paper lace triangle trim. The egg has its original hanging loop but it is torn.
The egg is in good condition. The two sides fit tightly together and the egg will display beautifully as a centerpiece under a tree or in a nest. Points to note: outside are missing pieces of the banded trim which are difficult to see and some rubs that dull the sheen in spots on the gold background. Inside, as noted above, the paper lace triangles are missing and there are some water stains and black spots. Please examine the photos and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
