Almanacs, the annual calendars containing important dates and statistical information such as astronomical and meteorological data and tide tables, were published in the United States early in its history. 18th century almanacs were published by notables like Benjamin Franklin and Benjamin Banneker and in the 19th century, the work of popular illustrators such as Kate Greenaway appeared in series of almanacs as well. Kate Greenaway, was one of the most renowned illustrators of the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Her images of charmingly dressed children at work and play captured the imagination of the English-speaking world and appeared not only in children’s books but proliferated in greeting cards, bookplates, advertising and fashion. From 1883-1895, again in 1897 and issued again in 1929, Kate Greenaway’s Almanack and Diary was published in both London and New York.

KATE GREENAWAY’S ALMANACK & DIARY FOR 1929 was printed by Edmund Evans and published by Frederick Warne& Co. Ltd. It measures 3” x 4 1/8”, a wonderful size to display with your dolls. It is a hardcover volume covered in green cloth with a gilt lettered title, a sewn binding, and gilt topped pages. The first section of twenty pages contains a calendar with holidays and saint’s days and phases of the moon. The second half is fifty pages and contains a diary calendar with space for daily notes and memoranda. It is illustrated throughout with full color images by Greenaway, many of which are full page.

The almanac is in excellent condition with some light foxing on a few pages but appears to be unread. “Printed in Great Britain” is stamped at the bottom of the title page and 75 is penciled on the inside front cover. Please examine the pictures and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
