Marcus Ward & Company of Belfast and then London beginning in 1867, was known for their fine chromolithography. The company became famous for the beautiful greeting cards they published, notably those drawn by Kate Greenaway whose paintings Ward discovered in the 1870s. Her first work for Ward was a valentine which turned out to be such a great success that, within a few weeks, upwards of 25,000 copies were sold! Valentines designed by other artists followed, some of which were distinguished by lace paper edging which would seem to be a transitional stage between the lace paper valentines which had for so long been the fashion and the pictorial valentine which so closely resembled Christmas cards.

This hard-to-find Marcus Ward & Co full color chromolitho embossed lace edge valentine is printed on light weight card stock. It measures 4 ¾” x 6 ½”. The romantic valentine poem is flanked by a floral garland and scene of a courting couple walking down the lane on one side and a pair of swans underneath. It is marked “Marcus Ward & Co” on one bottom corner and “Ent. Sta. Hall” on the other.

The valentine is in very good condition with a pale finger print on the front and some light glue residue on the back. Please examine the photos and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
