Just in time for Valentine’s Day, we have a 19th century marriage manual.
BRIDAL GREETINGS: A MARRIAGE GIFT describes the mutual duties of husband and wife. Written by Rev. Daniel Wise and published in 1850 by Carlton & Lanahan, New York, this volume is the 19th edition. It begins with a certificate of marriage for William Flanders of Plymouth and Clara Hardy of Plymouth joined together in Holy Matrimony by MW Prince on the 28th day of November AD 1872. Perhaps it was a gift from the reverend Prince on their wedding day.
This little once purple, now brown, bound volume, stamped in gold with “Lady, thy marriage bells are ringing” on the front cover and with gilded spine decorations, measures 3” x 4 ¾”. The 160 pages have gilded edges. Included are chapters on “avoiding the first quarrel”, “relatives and friends”, and “on making home happy” among others.
BRIDAL GREETINGS has typical signs of age and wear. The spine gilding has faded somewhat. The corners are bumped , there is some buckling to the cloth of the front cover and the back cover is rubbed. There is general foxing throughout. Please examine the pictures and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. What a wonderful piece of social history this is!
