Corsets fascinate me. The claims their manufacturers made to 19th century women! Health! Beauty! Grace!
Their advertising trade cards touted these benefits and more. Cooley’s Globe Corset patented between 1880 and 1882 was even the secret to romance! This metamorphic trade card for Cooley’s Globe Corset shows the uncomfortable thick waisted Miss Smith complaining to Miss Jones and when the card is unfolded shows the remarkably slimmed and smiling Miss Smith in her new Globe Corset.
“Miss Jones’ advice Miss Smith has taken
And finds her friend was not mistaken
In COOLEY’S GLOBE CORSET at the ball
She was the most admired of all
And Charlie told his love so she
Lived ever after happily.”
The folded card measures 3 ¼” x 3 ½”. Unfolded, the card measures 3 ¼” x 5 ½”. The card is made of thin card stock printed in blue on the front and red on the back by Donaldson Brothers, a lithographer in Five Points N.Y operating from 1872-1891.
The card is in good condition with a spot on Miss Jones' arm and a tiny split on the right side of the fold. Please examine the photos and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
