Here we have a small pyramid pin cushion.
The little multi-fabric pyramid was a popular form for handmade 19th century pin cushions, especially in England. Using the leftover scraps from earlier sewing projects, women could fashion charming gifts for their family and friends.
This cushion probably dates from the mid to late 19th century. It is filled with a solid material covered in what looks like thin buckram overlaid with plain pale blue and patterned white silk. It is joined with decorative black feather stitching and finished with tiny blue and white silk tassels. It measures 2” on each side.
The pin cushion shows signs of wear commensurate with its age. On one quadrant, a portion of the white silk has melted so that the buckram is visible and several of the feather stitches are missing. Please examine the photos and email me if you have any questions.
