I was thrilled to find these French handmade watercolor ballerina placecards. The expressions are wonderful and the feather tutus are over the top. The artist usually signed (her) work H.T. next to the dancer's leg but it is absent on this card. The cards were originally sold at the shop of E. D. Hautecoeur (stamped on the back but also missing from this card) and listed in the 1924 edition of BAEDECKER'S GUIDE TO PARIS & ITS ENVIRONS as a photographer, at 35 Avenue de l'Opera in Paris. This address is just down the avenue from the Opera Garnier where one might go to see the ballet.
This green tutu card is made from heavy tag and handpainted. It measures 3 1/8” x 4 1/4”. Several small feathers are glued to the skirt. The dancer is in excellent condition but the card itself has some glue residue on the back. I believe this part is a replacement since the artist's initials and shop stamp are both missing. Please look at the photos for more details.
Thank you for visiting my shop. While you are here, enjoy the other unusual placecards I have for sale.
