Chinese Mud Man Figurine
$65.00 It is marked simply with an incised CHINA on their bottom. It appears to be handmade and are glazed in traditional colors of white, brown and blue. This style of mud men were made to use in Bonsai display. I can just see him sitting under a bonsai tree playing his flute. They were not made as delicate shelf decor. This mud man is old and has great character and in wonderful no damage condition.
This is a very finely glazed piece. The quality of make and artwork of the characters is much higher quality than some I have seen on other sites. The glaze is incredible and nice and thick yet in glazes it almost appears transparent and rather reminds me of Japanese Hagi ware glazes. According to all our resources and in several articles, pieces marked with China or Hong Kong impressed in the bottom date to between 1890 and 1919.The glaze is very fine, the colors of the glaze are gorgeous and very well done. He has a great expression. This piece is in excellent condition and has been well cared for. Measures 4-1/2" tall and about 4" across.
Mud figures primarily come from the pottery centers of the Shiwan and Wanjiang area in Guangdong Province as well as other regions of China. As mentioned, many of these pottery centers are still operational today and are making the figures in the same poses but with much more concentration on facial expressions and the modern figures are much more refined than the vintage mud figures. Vintage mud figures are somewhat primitive and are glazed in vibrant blue, green, purple, yellow, red, and pearly white to name a few.
