Authentic Antique African Ghanaian African Tribal Trade Bead Necklace
$145.00 This piece was created with Ashanti powder glass beads from Ghana which have been made by African tribes for 1,000 years. This necklace of Ghanaian powder glass beads and came from the Bead Museum that was here in Glendale for years and years but is now gone.. This strand of AMAZING beads measures approximately 34" long from end to end, including the straw like raffia cord..and will easily slip over the head. For the most part they are all in wonderful vintage condition. The beads are all different sizes from slices to bold and chunky. The colors are amazing!
The raffia appears to be in sturdy condition and holding well...There are 69 beads on this necklace.. These beads would sell individually for at least $6.00 each for the smaller ones and for a much higher price for others.
These beads are part of the ancient and enduring trade in beads that spans more than two millennia and once stretched from the Middle East to East Asia and affected areas as far apart as West Africa and the American Pacific coast. Beads are universal and among the earliest art forms. Beads were ubiquitous in the ancient world serving as decoration, magical charms and powers, mnemonic and counting devices and symbols of wealth and status.
The success of this form of currency can largely be attributed to the high intrinsic value African people put upon decorative items. I love the idea that currency took the form of beautiful objects rather than coins or paper. Art was valued highly. Africans often used beads for currency, and accumulation of wealth. Social status was made clear by the quality, quantity and style of jewelry . This created a high demand for trade beads in Africa.
