Millefiori Italian Glass African Trade Bead Necklace
$125.00 The rich earthy reds, yellow, orange and black have unique markings and lots of gold fluss. These beads remind me of the majesty of the African continent and its beautiful bright clothing and cloths. This colorful necklace is 22" long and the beads are graduated from 10 mm to the largest at 12 mm. It closes with a silver tone, hand made, hook and eye. These bright and colorful trade beads are in exceptional condition.
Glass beads made between the 16th and 20th Century were widely used by European explorers as a form of currency to exchange for goods, services and even human slaves, particularly across the African continent. Most of these beads were produced in Venice, Italy where beautiful gold fluss and colored glass were used. The most commonly traded beads were known as MIllefiori or Thousand Flowers, produced by creating stripes or flowers from glass canes, which were then cut or molded to a core of solid colored glass. As they are hand made no two beads are identical and carry slight imperfections that add to their charm.
