Antique Charles X era French mother of pearl needle case etui. Hand carved from luminous mother of pearl. Finished with a gilded embossed mount at the opening. The front inlaid with a gold oval cartouche enameled with a pansy flower. This floral motif is common to these old Palais Royal sewing implements. Such needle cases would have also been housed within exquisite boxes and cases, complimented alongside similar pearl sewing implements and embroidery tools. Circa 1820 to 1830 period. The Palais Royal was an arcade of shops within the promenade of the garden center of the Palais-Cardinal, once the personal residence of Cardinal Richelieu. And such luxury items, Paris souvenirs and novelty trinkets were made available to wealthy patrons and travelers on Grand Tour. In overall good antique condition with general wear commensurate with age and use. There is a chip to the interior lip that slides into the lid, not visible of course when the lid is in place. Some tight hairlines to the pearl near the gilded rim, from years of opening and closing. A small recess located on the lower portion of the backside, does not appear to be a chip as it is very smooth to the touch and likely a natural flaw in the mother of pearl. Measures 2 5/8" x about 9/16"
