Elegant antique French Napoleon III to Belle Epoque era sterling silver full sized cup and saucer set. Nice larger size deep cup, perfect for a substantial serving of your favorite coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Both pieces decorated with an ornate engraved pattern of charming polka dots and stylized foliage. The cup further engraved with a blank cartouche surrounded by flowers. The handle is a lovely, solid casted silver with a finely detailed swan on top. Both cup and saucer are hallmarked with the French post-1838 Minerve 1st standard mark, which guaranteed the finest quality French sterling silver of .950/1000 purity (95% pure and higher than the .925 standard for sterling). Maker's marks for Parisian silversmith Ernest Compère, mark in use from 1868-1888 at 79 rue Quincampoix, Paris. Cup measures 3" height to the top of the swan handle x 5 5/8" width including the handle, having a 4 1/2" diameter at the opening. The saucer is 6 7/16" diameter. Total silver weight is 285 grams. In overall good antique condition with general wear, scratches from use. The interior of the cup with some shallow dimples.
