Stunning antique French sterling silver and gilt vermeil coffee or tea cup and saucer set. Beautifully crafted from quality French .950 purity solid solid with neoclassical styling. Heavily decorated with chased acanthus. Gorgeous casted handle is composed of stylized scrolling foliage and exquisite detailing. Finely engraved monogram of interlaced initials DL or LD. Lovely gilt vermeil interior to the cup, is in good order. Hallmarked with the French Minerve 1st standard mark, which guaranteed the finest quality French sterling silver of .950/1000 purity in use from 1838 (95% pure silver and a higher grade than the standard .925 for sterling). Also both pieces bear maker's marks for silversmith Léontine Compère, 1888-1919 at 79 rue Quincampoix, Paris. In good condition with general light surface wear from use. Cup stands 2 5/8" height x 4 1/4" wide with the handle. Saucer measures 5 1/2" diameter. Total silver weight of 196.2 grams.
