Antique French Sterling Silver Tea Strainer, Silversmith Tallois
Fabulous antique French sterling silver tea strainer. The tea strainer features an exquisite handle. Decorated with a floral cluster at the service end, finished with strapping and terminating to scrolling acanthus leaves surrounding an asymmetrical cartouche, tipped by a scalloped sea shell. Monogrammed with initials RF or FR engraved in elegant script. Featuring a finely pierced bowl surrounded by a wide decorative border. Engraved with an intricate pattern of rocailles, scrolled foliage, lattice, and flowers. Topped by a casted finial of acanthus leaves. In very good condition, with some general wear from use. Hallmarked with the French Minerve 1st standard mark, which guaranteed the finest quality French sterling silver of .950/1000 purity in use from 1838 (95% pure silver and higher grade than the standard .925 for sterling). Maker's mark for silversmith Paul Tallois, active in the late 19th century at 19 Boulevard de Strasbourg, Paris. A beautiful tea strainer of quality craftsmanship. Measures 6 3/8" length. The bowl measures 1 3/8" height with a 2 1/4" diameter. The largest we've come across with a nice large size bowl and a good solid weight in hand. Weighs 53 grams.
