Antique 19th century French sterling silver asparagus server by silversmith François Auguste Boyer-Callot. Both the handle and curved blade are entirely crafted from sterling silver, 950 silver, and fully hallmarked. Features exquisite pierce-work and fine engraving. Decor includes a palmette surrounded by heavy foliage. The 'a la Russe' style handle features an egg shaped finial and engraved accents. In very good condition.

Hallmarks on the serving blade and the handle. Marked with the French Minerve 1st standard mark, which depicts the goddess Minerva with a number 1 beside her to denote a silver content of .950/1000 (95% pure silver and a higher grade than .925 sterling). In addition to maker's marks for François Auguste Boyer-Callot, successor to Eusèbe Callot, active from 1865. His workshop was located at 30 rue Sainte Croix De La Bretonnerie, in what is today known as the Marais part of Paris, very close to the Centre Georges Pompidou Museum.

Measures 10 3/8" length x 4 1/4" at its widest point on the blade. Weighs 200.2 grams.

A similar asparagus server crafted by Boyer-Callot can be found on page 186 in David Allen's book on French cutlery. An interesting tidbit: We typically see asparagus tongs and handled servers executed in a variety of shapes and styles. Most silversmith catalogs offered a selection of servers to order in their most popular patterns. This included differing tongs and handled servers with a choice of a flat blade or a wide curved blade, some even having a reticulated thumb piece or catch, as the preference depended on the type of asparagus platting.
