Antique Art Nouveau Hand Painted Semi-Nude Miniature Portrait Signed, Figural Cherubs Gilt Bronze Frame
A fine 19th century French miniature portrait housed in a lavish gilt dore bronze frame. After the painting entitled Épanouissement (blooming) by the famed Italian genre painter and illustrator Angelo Asti (1847 - 1903), whose romantic portraitures of beautiful women were wildly popular at the turn of the century. Portraying a semi-nude beauty, her shoulders framed by a cascade of flowing chestnut hair, gowned in burgundy and gossamer drapery across her bosom. Her striking beauty and serene countenance are the essence of the classical femininity of a by-gone era that was popularized further by the elegance of the Art Nouveau and its penchant for romanticized, stylized imagery of goddesses and nudes. Such masterful artistry exhibited here, meticulously hand painted in an array of crisp colors finely applied by minute brushstrokes. Signed by the artist Toruet or Tornet and encased under a protective convex glass cover. Prong set in a gilt dore bronze frame. The frame alone is gorgeous, decorated in neoclassical ornamentation, the finely casted accents are beautifully detailed with openwork. Topped by a beribboned finial in the form of a bow and quiver of arrows (allegorical symbols representing Eros/Cupid) flanked by winged cherubs supporting a rose garland above the portrait. A pair of flower laden sprigs centered by a French ribbon bow reside at the base of the painting. A hinged metal easel accommodating for table top display in addition to a loop ring for hanging. The portrait backed by a now worn brocaded fabric matting. In very good antique condition, with general wear to the frame, no damage aside from the worn fabric backing to note.Frame measures 4 3/4" height x 3 1/4" width.
