Lovely 19th century French Palais Royal table top cigar caddy / match holder. Gorgeous cranberry colored glass serving as a holder for matches and a stand for your cigars or cigarettes, encased in elaborate gilt ormolu mounts. The framework features a linked chain motif to the cigar holder, and reticulated trim surrounding the glass base. Resting on an intricate base decorated with leaves and twisted wire framework. In very good condition with general wear, no chips or cracks to the glass. Stands 4 1/2" tall x 3 3/4" width. This charming cigar caddy would have been a novelty souvenir or memento acquired on one's Grand Tour travels of the mid to late 19th century. These early whimsical trinkets from Paris were found in boutiques of the famed Palais Royal of Paris, the promenade of the garden center of the Palais-Cardinal, once the personal residence of Cardinal Richelieu.
