Exquisite antique 19th century French tea caddy by Vervelle Paris, with superb kingwood quarter veneer inlay and brass bound edging. Working lock and key. Opens to a mahogany finished interior with matching lid, revealing a foil paper lined compartment with inner lid. Signature to the lock plate: Vervelle Paris. Measures 4" x 4" x 4 1/8" height. In very good antique condition with general wear. A scratch to the veneer near the lock as shown. Wear to the foil paper lining expected from use and age. To the underside of the box is a chip to the base veneer (shown in the picture), this is only visible when the box is turned upside down.

The firm of Maison Vervelle was one of the most renowned french cabinet makers, manufacturers and furniture sellers in mid 19th century Paris. Jean-Francois Vervelle founded the firm of Maison Vervelle in 1804 and went on to exhibit at the Paris Expositions of 1827 and 1844 as well as at the Paris Exposition Univeselle in 1855. Henry Audot took over the company in 1856 and became known as H. Audot Dallongeville working from 1 rue Neuve-Montmorency in Paris before taking back the original Vervelle House premises. The firm was particularly renowned for making small luxury items and « d'ebenisterie de gout et de fantasie », crafting exquisite pieces of small furniture, boxes, caskets and liquor cellars (tantalus). The Decorative Arts Museum in Paris has several of the firm’s furniture drawings.
