An antique Napoleon III era French enameled jewelry casket, circa 1860's. The box features five kiln-fired enamel on convex copper plaques with exquisite bejeweled decoration on a rare deep red /pigeon blood red background. Intricately patterned with arabesques, tracery, sinuous scrolling vines and flourishes and geometric forms, all painted in gold gilt. Enhanced with a multitude of raised impasto enamel dots in baby blue and opalescent white, resembling the look of turquoise and opal bead 'jewels', are compiled to form petite flowers, leaves and trim. Further embellished with red and green 'jewel' accents. Encased in gilt bronze mounts and resting on four ornate feet. The hinged lid opens to reveal a cream velvet lined interior. In overall very good condition with general wear commensurate with age and use. Because the enamel is fragile, almost glass like, these caskets are rarely perfect though this one comes close to it. No chips, cracks or damage to the gorgeous enameled panels. Lacking one tiny white 'opal' enameled dot, on the left side panel at the bottom corner; and one green dot on the lid. Dimensions (including feet) 4 3/8" length x 3 1/4" width x 2 5/8" tall.
