An exquisite antique 19th century French Empire style gilt bronze and cut glass jewelry casket. Encasing quality thick glass panels, wheel cut with wide beveled edges, a contoured beveled glass panel adorns the hinged lid. Unsigned, but most likely Baccarat work. The front features three silvered bronze medallions, exquisitely casted with openwork and fine details. To the center is the imposing figure of a knight in full armor, in one hand is a sword, and in the other is an asymmetrical heraldic shield, framed with foliage and palmettes. Flanked on either side by figures of Roman gods, titled below as War and Peace in Latin. Resting on four ornate feet with grotesque mascarons of dragons or beasts among elaborate scrolling foliage. Opens to reveal a tufted and tucked satin lined interior, with fabric lining the base. In overall very good condition with general wear. No chips or cracks to the glass panels. The box closes, but the lid does not completely align. There is some gap between the bronze trim and the glass on the lid, near the hinges. Interior lining is original and in good condition, perfect to display treasured family heirlooms and jewelry. The box displays beautifully. Very nice size, measures 8 1/4" in length x 5" width x 5 1/4" height.
