Antique 19th century Swiss Black Forest hand carved wood hunting trophy wall plaque, wonderful "Fruits of the Hunt" themed sculpture. Featuring a detailed still life of a game bird (perhaps a woodcock), suspended from a branch of leaves, all done in raised relief. The figure is carved from solid wood and mounted on a shaped panel. Superb carving with excellent detail, in particular the beautiful multitude of feathers. Displays beautifully showing a nice dark brown finish and patina. The piece is signed by the artist/carver, rare to find a signed Black Forest piece. Signed B. Ruef. The Ruef Brothers were famous carvers, known in particular for their large bears and owls, from the town of Brienz, Switzerland and mentioned in "Swiss Carvings The Art of the Black Forest 1820 - 1940" by Jay Arenski. Overall in good antique condition with general wear commensurate with age. There is a split flaw to the beak of the bird as shown, some typical edge chips to the feather and leaf tips. Measures 27" height x 15" wide.
