Oil on board painting of a dog by Belgian artist Geo Mommaerts (1923-2006). Titled Baba and dated July 1977. The painting depicts a black or gray dog against a blue background. A poodle perhaps, wearing a lovely red collar. Nice impressionist styling to this painting with thick texturing. The scene is charming and serene with soothing color tones. Signed upper left Geo Mommaerts. In a wood frame with silver gilt finish.
Frame measures 24 7/8" x 21 5/8". Painting is 18 1/4" x 15". In good condition. General wear to the frame. There is a spot of wear to the upper right corner of the painting.
Geo Mommaerts ( Diegem , July 20th 1923 - 2006 ) was a Belgian painter. From 1939 to 1947, he trained as a painter at the Art School of Saint-Joost-ten-Node and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he studied under Léon Devos. Noted for painting urban views and architecture, with a preference for city quarters in Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. He also painted seascapes on the North Sea and interior views. Professionally, Mommaerts was theater decorator and lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels (1963-1983) and at the Academy of Ixelles. He was a fellow of the Godecharle Prize in 1947 and co-founder of the artists' "Artes Bruxellae"(1974). In 1994-1995, there was an exhibition of his work in the town of Schaerbeek .
