Oil on canvas by listed Dutch artist Adrianus (Arie) Johannes Zwart, (August 30 1903 - August 27 1981). A traditional Dutch interior painting in the manner of the The Hague school with an interior view of an old Brabant country house. Born in 1903 in Rijswijk Holland, Adrianus Johannes Zwart started painting from an early age, taking lessons from the artist Otto Kriens, and later studying for 2 years at the Academy of Fine Art in The Hague. He traveled in the Netherlands, and further afield, taking his family with him on numerous painting tours, lived in France and Spain for many years. He died in 1981, after a long and productive career. His subjects included landscapes, rural scenes, still life and interiors. His early work was influenced by the subdued tones of the Hague School of artists, but he later broadened his style, adopting a more impressionist approach and using a lighter palette of colors. Zwart is best known for his skill of using light to create depth, mood and atmosphere. Signed on the lower right. Wood frame with gilt trim. In overall good condition. Frame is 28 3/8" x 24 3/8". Canvas is 23 3/4" x 19 3/4"
