Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806) was an all-time French master painter and print-maker active in the last decades of the Ancien Régime. Marguerite Gérard (1761-1837) was his disciple and sister-in-law. Fragonard was a curator at the Louvre which entitled him and his family, including Marguerite, to free living quarters there. She was exposed to the best art from an early age, became very successful in her lifetime and her painting "Clemency of Napoleon to Madame de Hatzfeld" was purchased by Napoleon.
