Charming French Pillivuyt game tureen / terrine in the shape of a baked meat pie with a three dimensional lid shaped as a rabbit / hare head with glass eyes. Inscription on the underside reads as follows:

Number 3 is a medium size, since this kind of tureen came in sizes 1 to 5 with 5 being the largest. Pillivuyt & Cie Porcelaines first factory was founded in the year 1800, there is a full description of the company in the French Section of the Official Catalogue of the 1862 International Exhibition also known as the Great London Exposition held in South Kensington. Game tureens are often described as Majolica for their naturalistic subject matter and outer three dimensional appearance. The maker describes them as Porcelaines a Feu (fired porcelain) which is confirmed by their hard, glassy, white interior. Lid has factory made perforation to let out steam. This is a heavy and substantial piece weighing close to 3 1/2 lbs. unpacked. In very good condition with minor shelf wear and small imperfections from the time of manufacture as shown.
