Charming antique figural majolica humidor / tobacco jar depicting a rosy cheeked, hooded monk. It is coded on the underside with impressed numbers 3605 8. This is quite a large size jar, more than 9" tall. Tobacco jars became very popular in the mid 1800's when snuff was replaced with pipe smoking. They came mostly from Austria, Bohemia and Germany. Some of the best known makers were Johann Maresch, Bernhard Bloch, Wilhelm Schiller & Son, Josef Strnact , Schafer and Vater, and Schierholz and Son. Some of them started out as apprentices to majolica pipe bowl makers. In very good used condition with minor imperfections typical of majolica as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
Measurements: 9 3/16" tall by 5 1/2" wide by 6 1/2" deep approximately.
