French Rouen Faience Grotesque Decor Fantastic Creature Platter / Tray Manganese - 20th Century, FranceFrench Rouen Faience Grotesque Decor Fantastic Creature Platter / Tray Manganese - 20th Century, France

Charming French faience platter / serving tray decorated in manganese with fantastic creatures in a style known as grotesque decor. Manganese is a brown-purple color seen in early Grand-Feu (high fire) faience, a high temperature firing technique that allowed a limited color palette. The tray is marked with crossed lines and dots on the front center right. A similar mark was used by faience factories in Rouen and Sinceny (the latter founded by potters from Rouen and Nevers and hence greatly influenced by their style) as shown in the book Les Marques des Poteries et Faïences Françaises. Perfect to display in a dining hutch in a French Provincial / country cottage / farmhouse style setting. One of a pair listed separately. Additional pieces in this pattern available. In very good condition with light crazing and minor imperfections from the time of manufacture typical of faience as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.

Measurements: Tray: 10 3/4" diameter approximately.
