Charming French faience pot de creme dessert set with serving tray decorated in manganese with fantastic creatures in a style known as grotesque decor. Manganese is a brown-purple color seen in early Grand-Feu (high fire) faience, a high temperature firing technique that allowed a limited color palette. Pots and tray are marked with crossed lines and dots. A similar mark was used by faience factories in Rouen and Sinceny (the latter founded by potters from Rouen and Nevers and hence greatly influenced by their style) as shown in the book Les Marques des Poteries et Faïences Françaises. All six pots are lidded and displayed in a beautifully decorated platter that can be used as a tray or displayed separately. In very good condition with minor imperfections typical of faience as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
Measurements: Tray: 10 3/4" diameter; Pots: 3 7/8" tall including lid finial; 2 3/4" high without lid approximately.
