Outstanding pair of antique 18th Century English copper engravings hand colored and inscribed as follows:

A Perspective view of the Bowling Green & c. at Gubbins in Hertfordshire, a Seat of St. Jeremy Sambrooke Bart. Published according to Act of Parliament March 1748 & Sold by John Tinney at the Golden Lion in Fleet Street London. Chatelaine delin.

A South Prospect of the City of Oxford - Vue de la Ville d'Oxford du Cote du Midi
Jn. Boydell Delin & Sculp. Published according to Act of Parliament by the Proprietor J. Boydell at the Unicorn the corner of Queen Street in Cheapside London 1751. Price 1 S.

The first engravings shows a summer view of the city of Oxford with a field of wheat being harvested by a team of reapers in the foreground. A bowling green is a large expanse of turf meant for the game of lawn bowling. It is believed that lawn bowling derives from the game of "Bocce" introduced by the Roman Legions to the British Isles.

John Tinney (1707? - 1761)) was an 18th Century British publisher/printer; printmaker.
John Boydell (1720-1804) was an 18th Century English engraver, print publisher and lord mayor of London.
Jean Baptiste Claude Chatelain (1710–1758) was an English engraver of French background employed by Boydell.

A copy of the Bowling Green engraving is part of the collection of the Yale Center for British Art. They come ready to display, with matching mats and subtly gilt wood frames. Both engravings have The Old Print Shop, New York labels on the reverse. Unexamined outside of frame, photographed through glass which explains any reflections. In very good used condition with minor toning and imperfections as shown. Shipped professionally packed, fully insured with tracking number.
