Beautiful Romantic / Orientalist style lithograph of tiled roofed villages and mountainous, dry landscapes with palms. One of a pair listed separately. It depicts small figures of French foreign legion soldiers walking around, in a peace-time attitude, talking to ladies passing by. They wear white flowing pantaloons and blue waistcoats characteristic of French Souave colonial infantry troops, also referred to as Algerian due to their origin. The predominant architecture in the town portrayed is Spanish style with a Moorish influence, most likely southern Spain.
This Romantic style / Orientalist composition, with figures dwarfed by their surroundings, brings to mind the work of early 19th century masters such as David Roberts and Genaro Perez Villaamil. It comes ready to display in a gilt wood frame. In very good used condition, with overall toning, trimmed, and mounted on board, with gilt wear and minor imperfections to frames as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
Measurements: Frame: 16 5/8" by 13 3/4"; Image: 10 3/8" by 6 3/4" approximately.
