Outstanding boxing match lithograph with hand colored painting after a drawing by artist W. L. Walton published by George Newbold and Bufford & Sons. It commemorates the first world championship fight between John Heenan (USA) vs. Tom Sayers (UK). It was a bare-knuckled fight that lasted two hours and twenty minutes, forty two rounds and was illegal. The fight ended in chaos as the spectators broke into the ring and the Hampshire Constabulary intervened. It was declared a draw, each fighter received a championship belt and divided the prize. It was the last fight of its kind, the public was so shocked by its brutality that a law was passed to ban bare knuckle fighting. Inscription below the image reads as follows:

THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEST BETWEEN HEENAN AND SAYERS AT FARNBOROUGH, ON THE 17TH OF APRIL 1860.
Containing upward of 250 portraits from photographs taken especially for this work.
Drawn by W. L. Walton.
Litho. Bufford Sons Boston.
London, Published November 5th 1860, by George Newbold, 303 & 304, Strand W. C.
Entered according to Act of Congress in the clerks office of the district court for the southern district of New York...this being the joint work of an American and an English artist, the copyright is reserved in both countries and will be strictly maintained.

The composition is most unusual, with the spectators facing front, as if posing for the artist. More than two hundred and fifty individual photographic portraits were taken and later combined into a montage by the lithographer to achieve this result. The majority of the spectators were photographed by Watkins, a London photographic studio active at the time. It is believed that the boxer portraits were taken by English photographer Frederick William Nichols (1832-1902) who was allowed to photograph the fight and is portrayed among the spectators.

A lithograph of this fight is part of the Royal Collection Trust. W. L. Walton's works sell in major international auction houses such as Christie's. It comes ready to display in a fine, pale color wood frame. In very good used condition with minor imperfections to frame as shown. Unexamined outside of frame, photos taken through glass which explain reflections. To get a sense of its scale see in context (last photo). Other items shown in the last photo available under separate listings.
