Charming French Pillivuyt game bird tureen / terrine in the shape of a baked meat pie decorated with a three dimensional pheasant head lid finial. It is numbered 4, one of the larger sizes, since this kind of tureens came in sizes 1 to 5 with 5 being the largest. Pillivuyt & Cie Porcelaines first factory was founded in the year 1800, there is a full description of the company in the French Section of the Official Catalogue of the 1862 International Exhibition also known as the Great Lonon Exposition held in South Kensington. Game tureens are often described as Majolica for their naturalistic subject matter and outer three dimensional appearance. The maker describes them as Porcelaines a Feu (fired porcelain) which is confirmed by their hard, glassy, white interior. Inscription on the underside reads as follows:
PILIVITE PORCELAINES A FEU PILLIVUYT & CIE. MEHUN FRANCE
Lid has factory made perforations to let out steam. This is a heavy and substantial piece weighing close to 2 1/2 lbs. unpacked. In very good condition, appears unused, with minor paint wear and imperfections from the time of manufacture as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
Measurements: Size 4: 8 11/16" long by 5 1/2" wide by 5 1/2" high including lid finial (22 cm by 14 cm by 14 cm) approximately.
