Staffordshire Orangutan / Ape Pottery Exotic Animal Figurine - post 1850, EnglandStaffordshire Orangutan / Ape Pottery Exotic Animal Figurine - post 1850, EnglandStaffordshire Orangutan / Ape Pottery Exotic Animal Figurine - post 1850, England

Charming antique Staffordshire seated orangutan / ape figurine holding on to a bright green tree stump with one hand and a green fruit on his other hand. Small Staffordshire figures such as this one were made in Victorian times by unskilled laborers, including children, which explains their naive, folk style execution. Staffordshire exotic animal figurines such as this one are harder to find than those of domestic animals. We have seen similar figures described as Victorian, made in the second half of the 19th Century. Ape / Orangutan / Monkey depictions in the decorative arts reflect how Darwin's theories captured the imagination of artists and the general population in Victorian times. In very good used condition with glazed underside, ventilation perforation, fine crazing, minor imperfections from the time of manufacture and minor flaws typical of antique Staffordshire earthenware figures as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.

Measurements: 4 1/4" tall (10.8 cm) approximately.
