Beautiful antique engraving entitled "Paul et Virginie". It is based on the tremendously successful 1788 novel by the same name by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. It tells the love story of two childhood friends who lived close to nature in the island of Mauritius (known as Ile de France and a French colony at the time the novel was written). The story inspired works of art, operas and film The Blue Lagoon. The engraving portrays Paul and Virginie sheltered under a huge banana leaf. Inscriptions below the image read as follows:
