Antique English majolica Joseph Holdcroft painted pottery pitcher with a realistic bamboo shaped handle. It is predominantly turquoise colored inside and out, and is decorated front and back with swimming fish on a circular cobalt ground. It is fully marked, inscriptions on the underside read as follows:
Monogram JH in a circle (makers mark of Joseph Holdcroft)
English Registration Mark Letter D for September, day 28, year illegible but we know from other references that this model was registered in 1877.
Incised number 79 (year of manufacture number), painted black number 12 (size number)
Joseph Holdcroft was an English potter who worked many years at Minton before establishing his own pottery in 1870, The Sutherland Pottery at Daisy Bank, Longton. In very good used condition with fine crazing typical of majolica as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
Measurements: 7 1/4" tall including handle; 4" by 2 3/8" oval base approximately.
