Heavy cast bronze bell with verdigris patina capped with a crown and inscribed as follows: "San Jose Ruega Por Nosotros" and "Agusto 9 ano 1356" meaning "Saint Joseph Pray for Us" and "August 9 1356." This bell was made after the larger, original mission bell of Spanish Colonial Mission San Miguel located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Mission San Miguel chapel is considered to be the oldest church in the United States but not nearly as old as the date on the bell implies. We have seen larger examples of similar design made by London bell foundry J. Warner & Sons circa 1850's. It comes complete with clapper and has a good quality, high volume sound. This is a heavy and substantial piece weighing almost 4 lbs unpacked. In very good used condition as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
Measurements: 6" tall (15 cm) by 5 7/8" diameter approximately.
