Beautiful antique oval, large, metal dresser box / casket decorated with finely executed scene inspired by a circa AD 50 Pompeii fresco known as Cupid Seller. The symbolism of this image-- the idea that love can be bought -- was a popular concept in early Roman times and it captured the imagination of many artists, in a variety of mediums, after the ancient fresco's discovery among Pompeii ruins in the mid 1700's. Cupid Seller depicts a woman lifting a winged cherub from a cage and offering it to potential buyers. In very good used condition, hinged lid opens and closes well, patina wear to box body. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
