Stunning sepia portrait of Madame Recamier, among the most beautiful women of her time, in an extraordinary and even more beautiful French Rosewood rectangular frame. In 1802 Madame Recamier commissioned French neoclassical painter François Gerard (1770-1837) to paint this portrait of herself. Probably a photogravure, unexamined outside of frame. In good used condition with crackle to portrait edges and gilt gesso losses to frame ornaments as shown. Photo taken through glass which explains reflections.
